Kayo is a PhD student at University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Journalism and Media at the Moody College of Communication. She is also a graduate research fellow at the university’s Center for Media Engagement (CME). In 2021, she completed her master’s degree in Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University.

After working as a journalist at Kyodo News Agency in Japan, Kayo has been a freelance writer and a translator since 2016, writing about online mis- and dis-information as well as media literacy.

She is also an active member of the Japan Center of Education for Journalists (JCEJ), an organization dedicated to providing training and networking opportunities for journalists and researchers. At JCEJ, she led projects for the translation of journalists’ guides including “A journalist’s guide to working with social sources” and “Afield guide to fake news and other information disorders“.

She graduated from Ritsumeikan University in 2008 with BA in international relations.
